FRANKLIN – Virgil L. Leighton, 61, passed away Aug. 10, 2008, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Jan. 8, 1947, in Ellsworth, the son of the late Rodney and Evelyn A. (Carter) Leighton. Virgil was an active member of Franklin Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a trustee. He had a trained voice so he sang in any church that would ask him to sing. Playing games was a favorite thing he liked doing because he was spending time with either family or friends. He also belonged to Schoodic Grange No. 420 of Franklin, where he was treasure; Green Mountain Pomona No. 26, State Grange and National Grange. He was a member of the Franklin Vets Club, AMVETS of Old Town and VFW Post No. 109. Virgil had been employed at EBS for a total of 34 years and was very proud of his driving record. Up until the end of May this year, he had driven more than 3 million accident-free miles for the company. He drove a flat bed, boxed truck and his favorite was a big rig. Virgil is survived by his wife of 38 years, Lillian (Frost) Leighton; son, Paul L. Leighton and his wife, Bridget; his sister, Lorraine Coburn and husband, Jack, all of Franklin; two granddaughters, Brandi Morang and husband, Robert, and Nicole Hussey, both of Ellsworth; four great-grandchildren, Amber, Reese and Carson Morang and Devin Hussey, all of Ellsworth; two nephews, Lawrence Coburn and friend, Martha Moon, of Surry and Kevin Coburn of Signal Hill, Calif.; two nieces, Kathy Conrad and husband, Glen, of Andover and Joelle Dixon and her husband, Michael, of Keystone Heights, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Florence French of Trenton, Rachel Chamberland of Blaine and Gerri Frost of Ellsworth; one brother-in-law, Clayton Frost of Quincy, Ill; and by his adoptive family, Marvin and Rosemary Steers, Sue, Tom, Rhonda, Joyce and Ron of Kansas. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Lynn Leighton in 1993. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Ellsworth. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Franklin Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Scott Dow and Pastor Steve Sobel. Burial will be after at Bayview Cemetery, Franklin.
