SEAL COVE – Walter Lawrence Campbell, 82, died Dec. 31, 2004, sur-rounded by family at Mount Desert Island Hospital. He was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Seal Cove to Byron and Mary (Bartlett) Campbell. Walter served proudly in the U.S. Army armored division during World War II. When he returned to Seal Cove, he took Sophronia Harper as his bride and together they lovingly raised their only child, Marilyn. Together Walter and Sophronia made many happy memories during 56 years of marriage. Walter’s kind, mild mannered disposition made him a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be remembered for his accomplishments as a masonry contractor. The beautiful fireplaces he built proved his artistry and still warm the homes of many. Walter was an avid gardener and each spring he brought lovely flower and vegetable gardens to life, not only at his home, but at the home of his daughter. Walter faithfully followed the Mount Desert Island High School basketball and cheerleading programs while his grandchildren participated. Even after they had graduated, he supported high school sports. Walter was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He had a special bond with the family dog, Mindi. An entertaining storyteller, Walter brought fun and laughter to the friends he hunted with on Tinkers Island and camped with at Branch Lake. As a testament to his love for his great-grandchildren, he used his considerable woodworking skills to make toys for them that are certain to be enjoyed by generations.
