OLD TOWN – Walter S. Cook Jr., 88, passed away peacefully Friday, July 21, 2006, at his home. He was born March 11, 1918, in Stillwater, the son of the late Walter and Angie (Crocker) Cook. Walter attended Old Town High School and graduated with the Class of 1936. In 1940, he married Maxine (Bowley). In Walter’s early years, he worked for Old Town Canoe and went on to Camden Ship Yard during the war. In 1944, he joined the B&A Railroad as a telegraph operator and was later the station agent in East Millinocket for 10 years. Walter retired as supervisory agent in Millinocket in 1978. After his retirement, Walter and his wife traveled extensively around the United States in their motor home and later settled in their home on Pushaw Lake in Old Town. He was a member of the East Millinocket Congregational Church and a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Old Town and the Anah Shrine Temple in Bangor. Walter was also involved in the East Millinocket Chamber of Commerce, the Millinocket Chamber of Commerce and was a past president of the Kiwanis Club. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Maxine; two sons, Carl A. Cook and his wife, Joann, of Canaan, Ronald A. Cook and his wife, Nok, of Laurel, Md.; granddaughter, Robyn Dart and her husband, Howard, of Albion; grandson, Kanin Cook of Laurel, Md.; great-granddaughter, Victoria Dart; and great-grandson, Buddy Dart; two step-grand-sons, James Connaughton of Massachusetts and Michael Connaughton of Tennessee. Walter also leaves behind a brother, Clayton Cook of Stillwater. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Paula Downs in 1993; three brothers; and one sister. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday at the Alton Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Chaffee officiating.
