WALTER WESLEY SMITH BUCKSPORT – Walter Wesley Smith, 78, died Jan. 15, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born April 17, 1925, in Eastport, the son of Oscar and Emily (Phinney) Smith. Walter worked for Champion Paper Co., Bucksport, for 45 years. He enjoyed going fishing with his family and friends and frequent trips to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, also foliage trips in the fall to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Walter was a very devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, and had great pleasure in meeting the late Ted Williams. He and Tillie were great friends of the late Country Western singer, Dick Curless. Walter will be missed by two sons, George L. Shaw and his wife, Natine, of Titusville, Fla., and Greg Shaw of Belfast; two daughters, Gail Simpson and her husband, Bob, of Portland, and Donna Meade and her husband, Michael, of Bucksport; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Geraldine Hopkins, Maxine Atwood, Barbara Calvi, Emily Benson and Brenda Tinker. Walter was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Matilda B. (Silva) Smith; his parents, Oscar and Emily Smith; five siblings, Mila Moore, Franklin Smith, Charles Smith, Robert Smith and Ethel Witham; daughter-in-law, Beryl Shaw. Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Spring interment will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Bucksport. Walter’s family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all who helped with the care of Walter, especially Diane Johnston and Sue Carey.
