SCARBOROUGH – Warren M. Champlin passed away Aug. 20, 2004, at the Maine Veterans Home. Son of the late Clara Mae (Peirce) and the Reverend Frederick Rogers Champlin of Albion, he was born in Holden, April 6, 1911. He was educated at Coburn Classical Institute, Lyndon Institute, Vermont, and one semester at Marietta College, Ohio. He served his country in World War II as an Infantry Replacement in the 45th Division, US Army at Anzio, Italy and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He received his 50-year pin from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 50-year pin from the Masons. In 1937, he established The W.M. Champlin Agency in Waterville, sold it in 1958, and established The Champlin Agency in 1963 in Unity. He firmly believed that the only way to achieve success was through hard work. He earned numerous awards in insurance. He was a gifted athlete. A lifelong golfer, he won many tournaments, most prominently the New England “Lefties” (National Association of Left- Handed Golfers/USA, New England Chapter), five times. He toured with the National Lefties to Australia and to British Columbia, Canada. At 70 and at 80 years old, he shot his age. A passionate believer in higher education, he proudly put his children through the finest colleges and universities and established The Champlin Education Trust for his grandchildren’s education. He is survived by his five children and their families: daughter, Jo Champlin Casey and her husband, Coleman, and their daughter, Nell, of Hartford, Conn.; son, Warren M. Champlin II, his wife, Lois, and their sons, Reece, Spencer, and Brady of Scarborough; son, James W. Champlin and his wife, Melora Coggeshall, and their daughters, Naomi, Ariana, and Thea, of Bar Mills; daughter, Sara Champlin of Jamaica, West Indies; and daughter, Lisa Champlin of Oregon. A wonderful friend, Margaret Prior of Unity, her daughters, Elizabeth Prior of Portland, and Martha Coriveau of New Hampshire; his nieces, Anne Champlin and Miriam Martineau, her husband, Don; a nephew, John Champlin, his wife Carroll; and his cousins, Charles, Charlotte and Jean Peirce survive him also. His wife, Flora Wing Champlin; his sisters, Helen Champlin Clark and Mary Champlin; and his brother, Dr. Frederick B. Champlin, predeceased him. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. During his lifetime, Mr. Champlin contributed to the Town of Albion Library and to the Albion Fire Department. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Union Church, Unity. Burial will be in the family plot in Bradford, at the convenience of the family. Cremation Basics, Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.
