HODGDON – Wayne “Shorty” Hand, 67, passed away Oct. 12, 2006, surrounded by his family after a battle with cancer. He was born July 25, 1939, in Willimantic, Conn., the son of Charles and Josephine (Blackie) Hand. Wayne worked for Hagen Manufacturing for several years, Great Northern Paper for 17 years and was a tanker truck driver for Irving Oil. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish and go camping with his family. In his spare time he was restoring his father’s 1945 2N Ford tractor. He held fond memories from his earlier years as a Scoutmaster in Hodgdon, with some scouts achieving the Eagle awards. Besides his mother of Hodgdon, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dee (Howard) Hand of Hodgdon; three children, Travis “Reb” and his wife, Roberta, of New Limerick, Trent “Smokey” and his wife, Sandra, of Houlton and Tracy and her husband, Peter Prygrocki, of Corinth; four grandchildren, that were the joy of his life, Amanda, Jared, Trevor and Cody; one brother, Jerry and his wife, Georgette, of Tolland, Conn.; two sisters, Carolyn and her husband, Gerald Benn, of Hodgdon and Mary and her husband, Bobby Currie, of Kennebunk; a brother-in-law, Gerald Howard and his wife, Marilyn, of Hodgdon; many nieces, nephews; all his four-wheeling and camp buddies; and his faithful companion, “Daisy.” He was predeceased by his father, Charles. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water St., Houlton, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Marilyn Rohdin officiating. Interment will be at Hodgdon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to the charity of one’s choice.
