PORTAGE LAKE – Wayne Sutherland, 80, died July 26, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 24, 1924, at Portage Lake, the son of Lloyd and Vera (Wilcox) Sutherland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, surviving 38 missions from England to Germany during the war. Wayne was a great lover of horses and one of his best friends was his dog, Laddie. Wayne was proud to have been a born-again Christian in the conservative Baptist faith at the significant age of 33 years. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 58 years, Gloria (Soucy) Sutherland of Portage Lake; one daughter, Debbra Pentland and her husband, Edward, of Whitinsville, Mass.; five sons, Gary Sutherland and his wife, Barbara, Richard Sutherland and his wife, Donna, all of Whitinsville, Mass., Jay Sutherland and his wife, Kim, of Lebanon, Conn., Mark Sutherland and his wife, Dale, of Portage Lake, Troy Sutherland and his wife, Lori, of Winchendon, Mass.; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bessie Cory and Gail Sutherland, both of Presque Isle, Jeannie St. Pierre and Sandra Porter, both of Ashland; one brother, Rev. Lloyd Sutherland and his wife, Doris, of Washington, D.C. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, at the Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, 114 Exchange St., Ashland, with his son-in-law, the Rev. Edward Pentland, officiating. Committal service and interment will follow in the Portage Lake Municipal Cemetery.
