MILLINOCKET – Wayne Victor Scarano, 63, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, in Plymouth, N.H., while recovering from a prolonged illness. He was born Oct. 26, 1944, in Hayward, Calif., to Victor and Helen Scarano. After serving his country as a marine sergeant in Vietnam, he moved his family to Houlton to further his education at Ricker College. He stayed after graduation, joined the Houlton Police Department, and developed a lifelong career in law enforcement. Highlights of that career included graduating from the prestigious FBI National Academy in 1986 and eventually becoming the chief of police in Millinocket. He held leadership positions in a variety of civic, charitable and patriotic organizations including the American Legion, VFW, Masons, the Order of the Eastern Star and Millinocket Rotary Club. Of special importance was his relationship with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, in which he served as Exalter Ruler of Houlton Lodge, state president of Maine Elks Association, and as a loyal contributor to the Elks National Foundation. After retirement, he served as a Millinocket town councilor and member of the Millinocket school board. Wayne Scarano had unquestioned loyalty to his family, community and America. Although stoic and private in nature, he had a generous character, usually wanting to give more than necessary and take less than deserved. He was predeceased by his parents, Victor and Helen Scarano; as well as his wife, Theresa. She was the love of his life; a gentle woman and partner of 25 years, whom he was never quite able to let go. They are now where they both wanted to be, together forever. He is survived by his son, Mark V. Scarano of Ashland, N.H.; aunts, Myrtle Murphy and Mildred Holbrook, both of Casselberry, Fla.; cousin, Helen Eisner and husband, Bill, of Townsend, Mass.; and mother-in-law, Marguerite Harris of Beverly, Mass. A graveside remembrance ceremony will be held in the spring at Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Wayne may be sent to Theresa Scarano Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of Katahdin Federal Credit Union, 1000 Central St., Millinocket, ME 04462. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.lamsonfh.com.
