BREWER – Weston Meserve Hodgkins, 76, died Nov. 22, 2005, at home from complications relating to pulmonary fibrosis. Mr. Hodgkins was born April 25, 1929, to Bryan Meserve Hodgkins and Eleanor Kate (Dufresne) Hodgkins. He graduated from Waldoboro High School in 1947 and subsequently enrolled at the University of New Mexico. In Aug. 1950, Mr. Hodgkins joined the U.S. Air Force and in October 1951, he was commissioned a second lieutenant. In his service as a navigator in the Air Force, Col. Hodgkins served in the Korean War, served with United Nations forces in Africa during the early 1960’s, flew dozens of missions into and out of Vietnam in the late 1960s, and logged more than 10,000 flight hours. During his career, he and his family lived throughout the United States and Great Britain. Col. Hodgkins retired from the Air Force in 1970 and returned to Maine, settling in Brewer. He returned to college and graduated in 1973 from the University of Maine at Orono with a bachelor of science degree. In 1977, Mr. Hodgkins began a second career as a rural mail carrier, working out of the Bangor Post Office. In 1986 he transferred to the Brewer Post Office, from which he retired in 1994. Col. Hodgkins is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Jean Hodgkins; their sons, Karl Martin Rossi III of Milbridge, Bryan Meserve Hodgkins II and his wife, Judith, of Amesbury, Mass. and Blair Burgess Hodgkins of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Silas, Kelsey and Saben Rossi and Morgan, Lauren and Christina Hodgkins; sisters, Mary Louise Staab and Gertrude Anne Hodgkins of Jefferson and Adele Hodgkins Suga of Vassalboro; and brothers, Lloyd Stanley Hodgkins and Bryan Thomas Hodgkins of Jefferson. A private service will be held at a later date, with interment at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
