INDIAN ISLAND – Wilburn R. Massey, 80, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2007, after a prolonged ill-ness. He was born Feb. 14, 1927, in Gaffney, S.C., the son of Wilburn R. Massey Sr. and Olive Mae Roundy. Will served in World War II in the U.S. Army in Europe. In June 1948, he married Carolyn Lolar, a Penobscot from Maine. After a brief stay in South Carolina, they settled in Maine and raised five children. Will retired from the University of Maine – Orono in 1992, and he and Carolyn settled into their home on the Penobscot Reservation. Will enjoyed summers with his visiting grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hooting and hollering at football games with his son, Sid, was a great source of enjoyment for him. He was an avid history buff and enjoyed watching the history channel and television shows about animals. Will was predeceased by his parents and six siblings. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Lolar Massey of Indian Island; five children, Linda Brownlee of Dover, N.J., Laura Massey of Bozeman, Mont., Timothy Massey of Swannanua, N.C., Sidney Massey of Old Town, and Barbara Massey of Milford; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Brandy. Friends may call 7 a.m. Friday, March 16, until the time of service at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Indian Island. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Farley, celebrant. Interment will be in the spring. Arrangements are under the care of Birmingham Funeral Home.
