BLUE HILL – Lt. Col. Andrew Frederick Hutchins, 99, died March 11, 2007, in Blue Hill. He was born June 28, 1907, in Portsmouth, N.H., the son of Eugene and Providence (Hutchins) Hutchings. Andrew attended schools in Portsmouth, N.H., and graduated from Portsmouth High School. He became master counselor of the Portsmouth DeMolay. He attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Andrew was a veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Col. Hutchins served in many and varied assignments in the United States and overseas. His service included duty as instructor of tactics, operations training staff officer, Officer Candidate School, Fort Knox, Ky.; assistant S2, Military Advisory Group, Nanking, China; instructor of field engineering and instructor, information and education, general instruction department, The Armored School, Fort Knox, Ky.; information and education officer, liaison officer, S3, assistant S2, and headquarters company commander, 6th armored cavalry, European command; assistant operations officer, office of the assistant commandant, The Armored School, Fort Knox, Ky.; armored advisor, V corps, Republic of Korea Army, Korea military advisor group, armed forces, far east; unit advisor, XXI U.S. Army Corps Reserve, Lynchburg, Va.; and instructor and chief, leadership division, general subjects department, U.S. Army Armor School, Fort Knox, Ky. Col. Hutchins received the following decorations, Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Army of Occupation Medal, Germany; National Defense Service Medal; and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. The military career of Col. Hutchins reflected long and faithful service to his country. He was a Kentucky colonel by appointment of the governor of Kentucky. As a member of the Camden Yacht Club, sailing a 32-foot HAJ, he was champion of the Penobscot Bay in 1932. One of his favorite hobbies was gardening and he was a member of the Blue Hill Garden Club. He is survived by daughter, Alexandra E. Hutchins Kirkpatrick of Blue Hill; and brother, Nelson Hutchings. He was predeceased by his parents, wife, five sisters, and three brothers. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church, 15 Hinckley Ridge Road, Blue Hill. Interment will be held at Portsmouth, N.H.
