WHITING – William Allen Gardner, 73, died Jan. 30, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Whiting, Sept. 6, 1931, the son of Walter and Mildred (Dinsmore) Gardner. William was a graduate of Washington Academy, Class of 1950. Following graduation he served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He then returned home and worked at the Western Auto in Machias, and then at the Cutler Naval Base in the maintenance department until his retirement. He was a member of the Whiting Fire Department. He enjoyed being outdoors camping and attending auto-racing events. He especially enjoyed the times spent playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, June (Burke) Gardner; three children, Janine of Ellsworth, Alan and special friend, Lois Decatur of Machiasport, and Jody of Bangor; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Henry and Jordan; two great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Austin; a sister, Barbara Myers and her husband, Edward of Milford; seven brothers-in-law and spouses; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many special friends. He was predeceased by his parents. Graveside memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at the Whiting Village Cemetery, with Pastor Barry Blackstone officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the Whiting Community Building. Those wishing to make donations in his memory may do so to the Whiting Fire Department.
