AURORA – William E. Butler, of Aurora died Feb. 18, 2008. Husband of the late Irene H. Butler, William was born July 31, 1920, in Terre Haute, Ind. He was educated at Bishop Quarter’s Jesuit Academy, Chicago, Texas A & M, and the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he received a B.S. in Metallurgy. After working as a metallurgical engineer for the Curtis-Wright Corporation and as a technical writer for the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, William moved to Maine. He co-founded the Friends of the Maine Woods and the Maine Woodsman’s Association and served on boards of the Aurora Selectmen, the Hancock County Planning Commission, the Downeast RC&D, and the Portland West Neighborhood Planning Council. William’s family includes his children, Valera Crofoot of Bar Harbor, Lisa Butler of Fort Myers, Fla., Matthew Butler of San Rafael, Calif., Laurel Robbins of Somesville, Joel Butler of Holden, their spouses and children; his brother, Robert Butler of Pleasanton, Calif.; and his cousin, Helen Harbulak of Huntington, W. Va.
