JONESPORT – William “Billy” “Bill” E. Dyer, 56, passed away peacefully April 1, 2007, surrounded by his family and best friend at his home, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer, that spanned over a decade. He was born Nov. 7, 1950, in Bar Harbor, the son of Lewis and Virginia (Wilson) Dyer. Bill went to Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill. He went to radioman school in Bainbridge, Md. During his time in the Navy, he was stationed on the USS Josephus Daniels, based out of Norfolk, Va. Bill served off the waters of Vietnam. During his time in the Navy, he traveled the world, visiting such countries as Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, Japan, the Philippines, the Mediterranean and South America. After his service in the Navy, Bill worked for Mobil Oil, Tallahassee, Fla. He then attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, studying culinary arts for two years. Throughout his lifetime, Bill worked as a delivery driver for D.W. Small and Sons, Ellsworth; Bills Oil, Waterville and South Portland; and EBS, Ellsworth. He also worked for Beals Island Fisheries, delivering seafood and finally, as a delivery driver and salesman for Coca-Cola, Machias. Bill was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ, Jonesport and the Jonesport American Legion Post. He and his wife served as den leaders for a Cub Scout troop. Bill was actively involved in the Beth Wright Cancer Support Group, as well as an online prostrate cancer support group, where Bill’s story touched hundreds of people around the world, whom he offered his support and counseling to. Bill loved the time he spent among the Passamaquoddy people, enjoying the singing, drumming, and dancing. Bill and Wendy spent five special summers camping at Parks Pond Campground, Clifton. He always enjoyed his visits to Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., where he spent time with friends. Bill cherished the daily four mile walks in the woods with his wife and beloved dogs, Annie, Abby, Andre and Molly. Even after Bill lost his vision to strokes, he was able to continue his walks in the woods. Bill is survived by his loving wife, best friend and soul mate of nearly 21 years, Wendy (Hardy) Dyer; sons, Jason P. Dyer and wife, Alicia, of Fort Detrick, Md., Adam W. Dyer and girlfriend, Carolyn Rittenhouse, and Seth W. Dyer, all of Jonesport; precious grandson, Jessaniel J. Dyer; mother, Virginia Dyer of Joneport; siblings, Faye Carver and husband, Judson Carver III, of Jonesport and Sandy Dyer; aunt, Marian Smith; uncle, Leon “Busty” Wilson and wife, Joanne; special great-nephew, Noah Carver and many other nieces and nephews; special friends, Heidi Geel, Patti Carver, Tricia Carver, Sandy and Suzanne Carver, and Vivian Lewis, Michael Fleisch-man and Jack Martinez; extended family, Myron and Denise Hardy, Wayne and Sandy Newell, Taryn and Ken Monroe, Steven Fontaine, Mary Hardy, Dorothy and Joseph Burns, J.D. and Diane Newell, Chris and Kristin Newell, Martina and Herman Fortin, Philip Newell and Susan Barrera. He was predeceased by his father, several aunts and uncles. Bill will always be remembered for his witty sense of humor, as well as being a kind, gentle and loving person, who was always thinking of others needs before his own. Friends are invited to visiting hours 6 p.m. Monday, April 2, throughout the day Tuesday, April 3, at the Dyer home, 16 North St., Jonesport.
