PORTLAND – William H. Curry, 84, of Summit Park Avenue in Portland, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at the Barron Center, following a brief illness. He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., a son of William H. and Mary (Ross) Curry. He was a graduate of Bassick High School in Bridgeport, and Arnold College in Milford, Conn., where he excelled in sports, especially football. He received his master’s degree in education from Columbia University in New York. Mr. Curry was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II. He was a teacher in several Maine communities and retired as principal at Rumford High School in 1977. He was a communicant of St. Edmunds Catholic Church in Westbrook, and was very active in many church ministries. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Rumford American Legion. He enjoyed life especially times with family, friends and his golfing buddies. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Bernice Greenier Curry of Portland; a son, William H. Curry and his wife, Rebecca, of Brunswick; a daughter, Patricia Ripley and her husband, Brad, of Saco; a brother, John; and a sister, Kathleen; two granddaughters, Bethany L. Cox and her husband, Jeremy, of Brunswick, and Christina M. Ripley of Chicago, Ill. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Edmunds Catholic Church, 355 Bridgton Rd., Westbrook. Interment will follow in New Calvary cemetery, South Portland.
