WINTERPORT and SEARSPORT – William H. Holmes, 88, made his transition to a higher place Sept. 14, 2006, at Maine Veterans’ Home, Augusta. William was a lifelong resident of Winterport. He was born July 11, 1918, in Stockton Springs, son of Luther G. and Addie Brown Holmes. He was raised by foster parents, Albion and Clara Clark of Prospect Harbor. He was a graduate of Winterport High School, Class of 1936, a member of Temple Heights Spiritualist Church, Northport, a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific aboard the USS Gatlin. He was a self-employed smelt fisherman on the Penobscot River. William was employed by Knight Auto, Bangor, Grenci & Ellis Stone Shed, Frankfort, as a crane operator and he retired from General Electric, Bangor, in 1986. William is survived by daughters, Elizabeth Ann Holmes Council of Searsport, Kathleen Holmes Whitney of Florida; son, Thomas A. Holmes; grandchildren, Philip H. Holmes of Winterport, Billie Holmes Murphy of Spartanburg, S.C., Stacey Anne Holmes Fales and husband, Scott, of New Jersey; great-grandchildren, Amanda Murphy of Spartanburg, S.C., Sarah, Allison and Jake Fales, all of New Jersey; special cousin, Grace Knox Littlefield of Searsport; several nieces and nephews, Alfred Holmes of Orono, Arlene Holmes Smith of Stockton, Gloria Baker Harriman of Winterport, Vernice Baker Newcomb of Newburg, Theola Baker Doak of Belfast, Earl Baker of Frankfort and Doreal Baker of New Portland. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Robbins Holmes; son, William H. Holmes Jr.; great-granddaughter, Savannah Murphy; foster brother and sisters, Nelson Clark, Gertrude Clark, Doris Clark Baker and Eunice Clark. A celebration of William’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at his home, 1 Savage Road, Searsport. Burial will be private at Sea View Cemetery, Rockport.
