DEER ISLE – William James Pickett, 80, recently of Deer Isle, after 22 years in Barefoot Bay, Fla., passed away Friday, March 14, 2008. He was born Sept. 28, 1927. He was raised in and a longtime resident of Grandview Heights, Ohio. He was well known for his lifelong joy of playing tennis and he organized numerous community tennis tournaments, including the Senior Good Life Games at Vero Beach, Fla. He enjoyed all sports, but especially loved the Ohio State Buckeyes. Proud member of the original Brotherhood of Rooks while at Grand-view Heights High School, he graduated Bowling Green State University and obtained his master’s degree from Ohio State University. He was a teacher and coach in Ohio schools for more than 10 years before working in purchasing at Westinghouse, Columbus, Ohio, for nearly 20 years, then at DBA Systems, Melbourne, Fla., where he retired. He is survived by daughter, Nancy (Donald) Buckingham of Sedgwick; son, Gary (Elizabeth) Pickett of Salem, Ore.; son, Jerry (Shyla) Pickett of Santa Monica, Calif.; also survived by grandchildren, Jessica and Will Buckingham and Andrew and Brian Pickett; sister-in-law, Jean (Thomas) Brannan; nephews, Mike (Jane) and Thom Brannan; niece, Carol (Mathew) Fix; great-nieces, Kathryn and Sarah Brannan and Campbell Fix; great-nephew, Brannan Fix; cousins, Richard (Nancy) Pickett, Maggie (Levi) Monteau, Dolly Howard, Sally Bertolazzi and Pete Poston. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joanne Gardner Pickett; and his parents, Frank and Gladys Poston Pickett. Memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, Ohio, with a reception to be held after the service.
