BRADLEY – William S. Smith, 83, died Oct. 12, 2004, at his residence. He was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Harring-ton a son of Perley and Lillian (Stanhope) Smith. He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was taken prisoner by the Germans on Dec. 19, 1944, and liberated March 29, 1945. He was employed by Owens-Illinois for 28 years and was the bartender at the Elks Lodge and VFW Post until his retirement. He was a life member of VFW Post No. 3381 of Old Town, American Legion Post No. 75 and Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1287 of Old Town. He will be remembered for his fishing bounty and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards with his family. He is survived by four children, Philip Smith and his wife, Debbie, of New Hampshire, Jeanne Dalrymple and her husband, Gary, of Bradley, Michael Smith and his wife, Linda, of Milford, Darlene Young and her husband, Ricky, of Alton; nine grandchildren, four brothers, Alton Smith of Westbrook, Roland Smith and his wife, Edie, of Machias, Eugene Smith and his wife, Helen, of Harrington, and Perley Smith and his wife, Ina, of Jay; two sisters, Barbara Mitchel of Harrington and Patricia Worster of Harrington; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and Lloyd Hartford of Ellsworth; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Beatrice on June 18, 1998; son, Randy Smith in 2002; granddaughter, Melissa Smith in 1997; sister, Ollie; and brother, Philip. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where members of the American Legion will conduct a chapel service at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, at the Birmingham Funeral Home.
