EASTPORT – Winifred V. Smith, 90, died Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Eastport Memorial Nursing Home. Winifred was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Eastport, daughter of Walter and Ida (Dodge) Kierstead. She enjoyed swimming, spending time at the lake, camping, cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren. Winifred was predeceased by her first husband, Thomas Leighton; her second husband, Glendon Smith; two brothers, Winfield and Philip Kierstead; and a sister, Barbara Cushing. Surviving are her son, Wesley Leighton and wife, Sallie, of Punta Gorda, Fla.; four step-children, Vernon Smith and wife, Joyce, of Carmel, Patricia Turner of Hermon, Glenda Mixer and husband, William, of Carmel and Priscilla McIntire and husband, George, of Wichita Falls, Texas; two sisters, Geraldine Kinney of Eastport and Beatrice Cummings of Eastport; four brothers, Alfred Kierstead of Eastport, Charles Kierstead of Southport, N.C., John Kierstead of Quinton, Va., and David Kierstead of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mays Funeral Home – Flagg Chapel, 72 High St., Eastport. Burial will be held at a later date.
