DOVER-FOXCROFT – Wood-row Evans Page, 93, died Aug. 9, 2006, at a local nursing home. He was born Feb. 23, 1913, in Burlington, the son of the late Rufus and Nina (Beane) Page. He was a graduate of East Corinth Academy, Class of 1931, the University of Maine, Class of 1935, with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, the University of Michigan, Class of 1938 with a master’s degree in public health engineering and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1959. He was a registered professional engineer. He was a surveyor with the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Passamaquoddy Tidal Project 1935-36; sanitary engineer with the Maine Department of Health and Welfare 1936-50; solely made a sanitary survey map of the City of Bangor, pop. 30,000, including roads, houses, water and sewer lines and information of each dwelling; administered the Federal Hill-Burton Hospital Construction Program for Maine 1950-73, which included construction of most of the general hospitals of the state and additions, some mental and retardation facilities and one hospital for autistic children, a total of 93 projects. He served as ordnance maintenance officer, 51st Group Headquarters, 1st U.S. Army, European Theater; gave the order to send tank transporters to Omaha Beach to secure German tetrahedrons and to return them to our Ordnance Maintenance Cos. to make attachments for the front of tanks that would knife through hedgerows that allowed the 1st Army to break through to the St. Lo, France area. He was awarded the Bronze Star for this action. He also was awarded Five Battle Ribbons and retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served on the boards of directors of Maine Blue Cross/Blue Shield from 1962 to 1999, the Maine Lung Association, Maine Legal Services for the Elderly, Maine State Employees Association and was a trustee of Foxcroft Academy from 1962 to 1999. He was a life member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, a member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge, AF & AM, Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor, IOOF of Corinth, Reserve Officers Association, Life, former member of the Military Order of World Wars, the Retired Officers Association, Life, Maine Hospital Association, American Association for Hospital Planning, Maine Association of Retirees, Maine Joint State AARP Legislative Committee, chairman, two years. He helped organize an AARP Chapter for the Dover-Foxcroft area. He was also listed as a major contributor of jokes to Uncle Andy’s Digest, Aub-urn, from 1995 to the present. He was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis (Spear) Page in 1951; his second wife, Constance (Witham Brewster) Page in 1986; and by his oldest son, Robert Evans Page in 1945. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Joan Brewster Garniss and her husband, Howard, of Waltham, Mass.; two sons, Richard E. Page and his wife, Nancy, of Zephyrhills, Fla. and James E. Page and his wife, Angie, of Silver City, Nev.; a sister, Mrs. Lee Kreinheder of Clinton, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a niece, Helen Holt and her husband, Roland; a nephew, Norman Page and his wife, Patti. A memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A time of fellowship and sharing will be held after the service at the family home, 22 Winter St., Dover-Foxcroft. Interment will be in the family lot at Corinthian Cemetery, Corinth.
