MILLINOCKET – Woodrow J. MacDonald, 89, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, in Millinocket. He was the fifth child and fourth son of James and Irene (McGinn) MacDonald. “Wow,” as he was affectionately known, was born Aug. 6, 1916, in Millinocket. He attended the Millinocket public schools and graduated from Stearns High School, Class of 1935. After graduation, he worked at Weldon Dam and then at Great Northern Paper Company until his retirement at age 65. Woodrow enjoyed outdoor sports, especially fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, skiing, golfing and camping. He made and repaired many canoes. He also invented and patented a keel for canoes. He served in the merchant marines during World War II. Wow served as president of the Northern Timber Cruisers snowmobile club for two years. Woodrow is survived by his wife, Margaret (Gates) MacDonald of Millinocket; two sons and their wives, Robert J. and Hope MacDonald of Millinocket and Woodrow J. Jr. and Lynn MacDonald of Richmond, Va.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. At his request there will be no viewing. There will be a graveside service at Millinocket Cemetery in the spring.
