BANGOR – Penelope “Poppy” (Vafiades) Davis, 90, wife of the late Charles W. Davis Sr., died Sept. 25, 2008, at a Bangor hospital. She was born July 19, 1918, in Bangor, the daughter of Cost S. and Sotiria (Kaminaris) Vafiades. “Poppy,” as she was known, attended Bangor schools and Beal College, and later worked as a cashier at Paramount Restaurant, Central Street, Bangor. She was a lifelong member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Bangor. Poppy was a charter member of Bangor Municipal Golf Course, and a member of Bangor Women’s Golf Association and Maides of Athens. An avid fisherman, Poppy once caught a 17 1/2-pound togue at Lucerne. She enjoyed playing cards weekly with the poker club. Surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, especially Beverly Duffelmeyer, Joe Vafiades and Tony Vafiades III. She will be remembered by a longtime friend, Georgia Paul of Bangor. She will also be missed by her favorite cat, Watson. She was predeceased by her husband, in 1999; her son, Cost W. Davis, in 2002; four brothers, Jerry, Stavros, Peter and Ernest; and two nephews, Tony and Stephen Vafiades. Family and friends may visit 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, where a Trisagion service will be held 6:30 p.m. A funeral service honoring Poppy’s life will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor, with the Rev. Adam P. Metropoulos, presbyter, presiding. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
