BAILEYVILLE – Mary “Gert” Merrithew, 98, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at a Calais nursing home. Gert was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Boston. She enjoyed horses and vacationing on Swan’s Island. Some of her most memorable moments were spent with her friends on the senior citizen bus trips. Gert was predeceased by her husband, Lewis “Dennis” Merrithew; a son, Eugene Merrithew; and a daughter, Myrtle Clough. Surviving are her son, James Merrithew and his wife, Maralie, of Baileyville; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Merrithew of Calais; a son-in-law, Lawrence Clough of Ellsworth; eight grandchildren, Cindy True, Susan Maioriello, Jaynee McLellan, Denise McShane, Eugene Merrithew Jr., Lorie Merrithew, Beth Merrithew and Jenifer Craig; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held 1-2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where a funeral service will begin 2 p.m. Burial will be afterward at Woodland Cemetery, Baileyville.
