LEVANT – Donald P. Candage Sr., 76, went peacefully to his Lord Oct. 7, 2008, at a Bangor hospital after a long illness. He was born Jan. 15, 1932, in Waltham, the son of Percy and Doris (Braley) Candage. Don graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1951 and went on to graduate from Hansen’s Barber School, Lewiston, in 1955. He and his good friend of many years, Dana Crockett, are well known in the Bangor area for the time they have spent barbering together at the Union Street Shop. Don was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Service Medal and the United States Service Medal. He was a member in good standing of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kenduskeag Masonic Lodge, Anah Shriners of Bangor and the National Rifle Association. Don loved the outdoors and for many years served as the Scout Master for Troop No. 45 in Kenduskeag and was proud to see both his son, Dennis and grandson, Stanley receive their Eagle Scout. He is survived by his lifetime sweetheart and loving wife of 57 years, Ruth (Salisbury) Candage of Levant, who he married July 29, 1951; his three children, Donald Candage Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Carmel, Donna and her husband, Robert Goodspeed Jr., of Carmel and Dennis Candage and his fiancee, Sherri, of Exeter; his “favorite” sister, Charlotte and her husband, Peter Levesque, of Bar Harbor; his grandchildren, Craig Goodspeed and his wife, Amber, “Bucky” Candage and his wife, Angela, Amanda and her husband, Brandon Hay, Danika and her husband, Sam Salah, Joe Goodspeed and his fiancee, Miranda, Stan Candage and his wife, Melissa, and Robbie Goodspeed; and 11 great-grandchildren, Madison, Willow and Michael Candage, Abigail and Elijah Candage, Murnira and Brianna, Ibrahim and Zeyad Salah, Bradley and Brooke Goodspeed. A special thanks goes to Rose and David who have inspired and comforted Don and Ruth throughout this difficult journey. A special thanks to the Eastern Maine Medical Center palliative care group for their assistance as we gave our loved one over to the Lord. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Interment with military honors will be after at Waugh Cemetery, Levant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Candage home immediately after the interment.
