WINTER HARBOR – William C. Monroe, 62, died Oct. 8, 2008, at a Bangor hospital after a short fight with cancer. He was born March 3, 1946, in Providence, R.I., the son of Richard W. and Florence (Luster) Monroe. Bill retired from the Navy and served proudly in Vietnam. He also retired from teaching after 23 years at Sumner Memorial High School as a history teacher. Bill counseled at the Vet Center and was very passionate of the veterans coming back from Vietnam. He was a member of Lodge No. 192 AF & FM of Winter Harbor, Alcyone Chapter No. 71 of Milbridge and Past Patron Rubie Chapter. He is survived by his mother, Florence Monroe of Brooklyn, Conn.; beloved wife of 36 years, Elizabeth “Beth” Monroe of Winter Harbor; sons, Kenneth Monroe and wife, Taryn, of Hancock and Douglas Monroe and wife, Tammy, of St. Mary’s, Ga.; grandchildren, James and Brandon Monroe of Ellsworth, Lindsey Savage of Hancock, Timothy and Mirranda Monroe of St. Mary’s, Ga.; brothers, David Monroe and wife, Marcia, of Middletown, R.I., and Stephen Monroe of New London, Conn.; sister, Dr. Alice Ennis and husband, John, of Brooklyn, Conn.; sister-in-law, Janice H. Hayes of Johnson, R.I.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with the Rev.
