MILFORD – Alfred “Peanut” Oakes, 90, passed away Oct. 11, 2008, at a Bangor medical facility. He was born Sept. 2, 1918, the son of Andrew and Aurelia “Orella” (LaBree) Oakes. Peanut was a proud member of many different organizations, including VFW No. 3381, Old Town; American Legion Post No. 84, Orono; DAV, Old Town; M.O.C Pup Tent No. 21, Old Town; and Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3177, Brewer; and he was a former member of Adams Antique Auto Club. Aside from his many clubs, he also enjoyed woodworking, especially creating intricate miniature houses. Peanut joined the Army in 1941 and before he returned home in 1945, he was shot in the Italian Alps, receiving the Purple Heart. For some time afterward, Peanut also owned and operated Oakes Brothers Poultry Farm with his brother, Frank. Peanut was a carpenter by trade and a member of the carpenter’s union. He worked for Consolidated and Sullivan and Merit, retiring in 1981. Peanut is survived by his five children, Michael Oakes and his wife, Pam, of Milford, Mary Pilgrim of Bradley, Betty Smith of Bradley, Richard Oakes and his wife, Kim, of Bradley and Barbara Grant and her husband, Dennis, of Bradley; two stepchildren, Daniel Comeau of Bangor and Geneva Plummer and husband, Bill, of Milford; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Peanut was predeceased by his wife, Isabelle (Dyer) Oakes; his parents; stepdaughter, Georgina Matthews; and his brothers and sisters, Angie L. Lancaster, Irene E. Lindquist, Frances F. Parsons, Nelson A., Henry L., Laurence A., Clarence W., Frank G., Cecil R. and Eva M. Collins. A visitation will be held 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Interment will be at Milford Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to share their memories of Peanut at a luncheon at Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town, after the burial.
