CARIBOU – John G. Herbert, 76, died Oct. 12, 2008, in Caribou. He was born July 27, 1932, in South China, the son of the late Bert and Hazel (Morse) Herbert. John was a star football player at Cony High School and attended Colby College on a football scholarship, where his nickname was “Johnny” Herbert. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korea War. Mr. Herbert was a Maine State trooper, patrolling and serving Aroostook County residents for many years, retiring from Troop F in Houlton as a sergeant. John was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and loved spending time with his family; especially watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. He is survived by his former spouse, a lifelong friend, Carlene (Cyr) Herbert of Caribou; his son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Teelynne (McNeal) Herbert of Caribou; his three grandchildren, Cody, Searra and Cory Herbert; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, including a special niece, Linda Pinkham and her husband, Warren, of Chelsea. Mr. Herbert was predeceased by three brothers, Barty, Joseph and James Herbert; and two sisters, Barbara Fish and Margaret Park. Family and friends are invited to a commemoration of John’s life 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou, with Father Jean-Paul Labrie officiating.
