DAVID HOWARD AMES – EAST MACHIAS – David Ames, 64, passed away Oct. 11, 2008, due to a tragic fall causing a head injury. He was born March 8, 1944, in East Machias, the son of Frank and Roberta (Lund) Ames. Throughout the years, he served in the Army/National Guard, including during the Vietnam War, retiring in 1996. He also worked for St. Regis logging, Schoppee Farm, Ridge Dairy and RH Foster. He was self-employed as a logger-skidder driver, then went to work for Hanscom and Guptills as a log truck driver. In David’s last years he had a very special job-the job he took great pride in. David had a very special love for all children and it showed every day when he walked through the door at Tiny Toes Child Care Center, East Machias. All the children loved David, he was the grampie of all grampies. David went above and beyond for all the children and their parents. David would wipe noses, patch boo-boos, make special lunches and see that they had special treats. If a child was having a bad day for whatever reason, David would come to their rescue, sitting and talking with lots of hugs and understanding until they felt all better. The children knew they could depend on David. He will be missed by all. David enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, camping, whatever-as long as his best friend and lifelong love of 41 years, Gloria (Stoddard) Ames, was by his side. David also leaves his brother, Darold and his wife, Yvonne Ames, of East Machias, Burleigh and wife, Janice Ames, of Cherryfield and Gene and Rena Ames of East Machias; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; special friends, Reed and Wilma Leighton and family of Dennysville, Dennis Melanson of Whiting, Carlton “Fergie” Ferguson and family of Newburgh; and two special friends, Rosco and Boots. David also leaves behind his adopted family, the Hanscom’s, Barry, Jada, Jessica, Ricky and Chad. David and his wife, Gloria, watched over the Hancom’s and the Hanscom’s watched over them. Side by side for many years, their journey throughout life will be cherished. The Hanscoms’ hearts are filled with the most deep love and memories of David that will never be forgotten. He will be sadly missed. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at Jacksonville Cemetery. A gathering for family and friends will be held after the service at Tiny Toes Childcare Center. David requested no flowers, but instead donations may be made in his honor to Tiny Toes Childcare Center, care of Gloria Ames, 22 Dwelly Road, East Machias, ME 04630.
