NATALIE RUTH (STROUT) WHEATON – PENSACOLA, Fla. – Natalie Ruth (Strout) Wheaton, 81, a native of Bar Harbor, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, in Pensacola, Fla. She was born in Boston. Natalie resided in Bar Harbor through her high school years and later resided in West Hartford, Conn., where she did volunteer work at Newington Veterans Hospital for 12 years. She also lived in Ridley Park, Pa., where she received her nursing training. She worked 15 years as an intensive care nurse at Prince William Hospital, Manassas, Va. Natalie was predeceased by her husband, Capt. Stephen R. Wheaton, also of Bar Harbor, in 1950. Captain Wheaton was a decorated World War II ace fighter pilot in the CBI Theatre, whose plane crashed on a training mission at the beginning of the Korean War. She was also predeceased by an infant son that same year. Natalie is survived by a daughter, Leslie W. Pounds and son-in-law, James C. Pounds, of Foley, Ala.; grandson, Stephen John Goff; great-grandson, John Thomas Goff of Nashville, Tenn.; grandson, Christopher John Goff; great-grandson, Brayden Christopher Goff; two great-stepgrandchildren, Bailey Miller and Toby Tyler of Nashville, Tenn.; stepgrandson, Calvin D.V. Pounds of Northern Virginia; a sister, Peggy S. Young of Siesta Key, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Carl R. Wheaton of Williamsburg, Va.; and her beloved niece and nephew, Linda Y. Weeks of Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Carleton Clark Young III of Portland. A private graveside committal service will be held 11:45 a.m. Oct. 22 at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, Conn., with the Rev. Robert G. Woodward, of Elmwood Community Church, officiating. Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, West Hartford, Conn., will be directing.
