CASTINE – Cmdr. Francis X. Goodwin, U.S. Navy Reserves, retired, 78, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at a Penobscot nursing facility. He was born April 30, 1930, in the Bronx, N.Y., the son of Charles and Mary (Gorey) Goodwin. Francis attended and graduated from Maine Maritime Academy. He sailed as an engineering officer aboard various merchant ships. A long time faculty member of Maine Maritime Academy in the engineering department, he attended numerous training cruises aboard the training ship State of Maine. He was a retired commander of the U.S. Naval Reserves. In his spare time he enjoyed amateur radio. Francis is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Helen (Silsby) Goodwin; and one sister, Anne Gordon of Florida. He is also survived by longtime, close friends, Capt. Thomas Daley and his wife, Helen, John Lyons and his wife, Janet, and Thomas Garrett. He was predeceased by his parents. Family and friends will gather for visitation 4-6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport, as well as 1 p.m. until the time of the service 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be conducted by Father James Plourde. Burial will be immediately after the service at Castine Cemetery.
