HILLIARD, Ohio – Elsie Halley, wife of the late Dr. John Halley, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 25, 2008, at Arbors at Hilliard Nursing Home, Hilliard, Ohio. She was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Canton, Ohio, to a large English-German immigrant family, Nellie and Harry Pryor. She was a registered nurse, a dear mother of four children and an avid sports enthusiast, excelling in the game of golf. In her teen years, she resided with Ruth and John Walter in the Canton area. After secondary school education, she entered and graduated from Altman Hospital nursing program. There she met Dr. John Halley, M.D., of Cleveland, who also was born of an immigrant a Kiev, Ukrainian, family, Katrina and Jonik Haliski of Parma. Elsie and “Doc” were married in 1940. After his service in the U.S. Army during World War II, they established and realized their American dream goal in the coastal lake community of Vermilion, Ohio. Their family enjoyed the benefits of a small town community participating in many activities from street dances on Main Street to school sports activities to the summer water regattas. They remained in the area until later in life when Dr. John retired from private practice and accepted a position as physician at Ohio State University Health Center, Columbus, Ohio. They moved to Columbus, Ohio, in the late ’60s, residing in upper Arlington and enjoying the opportunities of living in a metropolitan university area. They frequently traveled to Maine to visit their daughter and traveled worldwide to the places of their ancestral heritage. She is survived by one daughter, Caroline Halley of Bangor and her five children, Christian Alvarez and his wife, Nikki, and their three sons, of Keller, Texas, Natalie Alvarez, ANP, of Brewer, Jonathan Moyer of Brewer, Benjamin Moyer of Bangor and Nathaniel Moyer of Los Angeles; two sons, Dr. David K. Halley, M.D., and his wife, Anne and their two sons of Columbus, Ohio, and John W. Halley and his wife, Denise of Hilliard, Ohio. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. John Halley in 2001; her youngest son, Donald L. Halley; her parents; seven brothers, Leroy, Harold, George, Donald, Raymond, Eugene and Glen Pryor; and one sister, Marge. She will be lovingly remembered as a devoted Mom. She was strong-willed, vital and energetic, always advising her children to “roll with the punches.” She had a strong faith in God, particularly enjoying hymns and country folk music. Her favorite hymn was “Amazing Grace.” She’ll be interred Oct. 29, in Columbus, Ohio. We’ll miss our mum and grandmum so much.
