ATHENS – Elwyn “Bullwinkle” R. Whitman, 78, went to be with the Lord Oct. 25, 2008. He was born Sept. 30, 1930, in Wellington, the son of the late Nelson and Elsie (Roberts) Whitman. Elwyn was a graduate of Somerset Academy, Athens, and went on to marry Shirley M. Tolman, Nov. 19, 1949. Elwyn worked for many years as a truck driver. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his two sons, Linwood Clark Whitman and wife, Yasuko, of Upland, Calif., and Leonard Carl Whitman and wife, Bertha Gay, of Malvern, Ark.; a daughter, Tina Meng of Athens; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and many close friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley Whitman, Dec. 6, 2006; his parents; and a granddaughter, Hiromi Whitman. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Mount Rest Cemetery, Athens, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
