HAMLIN – Loretta M. Smith, 87, died Oct. 30, 2008, at her residence. She was born Dec. 14, 1920, at Eagle Lake, one of nine children and the daughter of Frank and Edwidge (Raymond) Martin. Loretta attended Fort Kent Normal School, the predecessor of the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Her gardening and cooking were enjoyed throughout the family and until recent years her beans and bread were a Saturday staple. Loretta is survived by one son, William Smith and his wife, Irma, of Van Buren; one daughter, Carol Markell and her husband, William, of Harpswell; two brothers, John Martin of Eagle Lake, and Paul Martin and his wife, Rita, also of Eagle Lake; one sister, Antoinette Martin and her husband, Rudolph, of Hamlin; her sister-in-law, Margaret Martin, wife of the late Michael Martin; six grandchildren, Steven Rossignol, Kathryn Stratton, Jennifer Smith, Hillary Hofstein, Ted Smith and Ben Smith; and seven great-grandchildren, Caitlin Stratton, Jessica Stratton, James Stratton, Quinn Smith, Joshua Smith, James Rossignol and Charlotte Hofstein. She was predeceased by her husband, James E. Smith in 1986. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until time of service Monday at Ouellette-Thibault Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church. Interment will be at the parish cemetery. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to the A. J.
