BANGOR – Lillian “Tillie” Crowell, 89, wife of the late Murray V. Crowell, passed away Nov. 12, 2008, at a Brewer health care facility. She was born Jan. 27, 1919, in Carmel, the daughter of Lewis and Josephine (Goodwin) Hanscom. She grew up on the family farm. When World War II broke out, she traveled with a friend to Connecticut to work. She met Murray Crowell and May 23, 1942, they were married. When Murray was drafted into the Army, she returned to Carmel and worked in Bangor. When Murray returned from the war, they bought a home and settled in Eddington. She worked most of her life in Bangor as a housekeeper and nanny. She was well known for her excellent cooking. After this she worked at Franks Bakery for a number of years. Tillie loved to play bridge with her friends and go to Moosehead Lake with Murray. She was a member of Bangor Garden Club, Bangor Nature Club and Bangor Senior Center. She volunteered at the Maine Veterans’ Home. Through the years, many friends and families enjoyed her talents at making beautiful jewelry, as well as her famous wastebaskets. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by six sisters and two brothers. Surviving are many nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Ree Wells of Lincolnville, Edna Smart of Corinth, Helen Lewis of Orrington and Joyce Duval of Jackman. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with the Rev. Lloyd Leeman officiating. Interment will be at North Carmel Cemetery.
