PRESQUE ISLE – Edith E. Shaw, 100, wife of the late Frank Shaw, died Nov. 16, 2008, at a local hospital. She was born March 5, 1908, in South Hampton, New Brunswick, the daughter of Eldon and Grace (Stairs) Grass. Edith graduated from high school at the Normal School, Presque Isle; then graduated from Marcus Lucius Quinn Conservatory of Music, Boston, in 1924; and Aroostook School of Accounting in stenography and bookkeeping in 1926. She married George T. Pike, in June 1926, in Ashland where they farmed and ran a sporting camp at “Forks of Machias” for several years. Edith continued to operate the farm for several years after George’s death. Edith was a member of Presque Isle Congregational Church, United Church of Christ and was a past member of Ashland Congregational Church, where she was the acting pastor at a time when the church was between pastors. She was the first leader of the Congregational IT ,I’ll Try, Club and started the first Girl Scout Troop in Ashland, which she was the leader of for several years. Edith was a member of the Tillikum No. 99 Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, Ashland and had been employed by A.R. Gould Memorial Hospital and Weinburgs, Presque Isle, for many years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, church activities, visiting with friends over a cup of tea, music, laughing, telling stories and sharing words of advice. In addition to her parents; and her first husband, George Pike, in 1951, Edith was predeceased by a son, Clair, in 1936; her second husband, Frank Shaw, in 1988; and brothers, Donald and Harold Grass. She is survived by a son, George Pike and his wife, Laura, of Ashland; three daughters, Evelyn Petosa of Bristol, Conn., Joyce Federer and her husband, Ray, of Seattle and Arlene Davenport, of Bethesda, Md.; sisters, Velma MacDonald of Ocala, Fla., Cora Brown of Westbrook and Euda Bragdon of Laurel, Del.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, where Eastern Star services will be conducted 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at Presque Isle Congregational Church, 29 Church St., with the Rev. Dr. Robert Grove-Markwood officiating. Interment will be at Ashland Municipal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to the church or to the charity of your choice.
