NANCY N. HAYWARD

JONESBORO – Nancy N. Hayward, 74, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born March 23, 1934, in Framingham, Mass., the daughter of the late Rodman W. and Sadie May (Paddock) Nowers. Mrs. Hayward graduated from Medfield (Mass.) High School in 1952. She furthered her education at Michigan State and later graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, receiving a Bachelor of Science. In her career she worked as a medical librarian for more than 20 years in Massachusetts and then moved to Machias in 1977 when she became employed by the Machias Valley News Observer as the editor working for many years, retiring in 1999. Later she worked at the Jonesboro elementary school as a librarian for a couple of years. She enjoyed quilting, including assisting in the quilt that is raffled off at the Machias Blueberry Festival. She also liked to decoratively paint, feed birds, garden and spend time with her grandchildren. She was also an active community member, including the airport project, Jonesboro PTA and other community projects. She and her husband had resided in Jonesboro since 2002. She shared 44 years of marriage with Robert O. Hayward of Jonesboro. In addition to her husband, family members include her daughter, Robin Pineo and husband, Steven, of Jonesboro; stepdaughters, Vicki Smith and husband, Max, of Nebraska and Terri Beuhler and husband, Winn, of Nebraska; nine grandchildren, Kelley, Robbie, Erik, Andy, Ashley, Keith, Emily, Nick and Colin; eight great-grandchildren; twin brothers, Darel Nowers and wife, Judy, and David Nowers and wife, Josie, both of Massachusetts; a sister, Hilary Fleming and husband, Tom, of Freedom; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Rodman C. Nowers. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Centre Street Congregational Church, Centre Street, Machias, concelebrated by Pastor Betty Duzen and the Rev. Gini King.
