PORTLAND, Maine — The John Bapst Crusaders won their first football state title in 32 years with a 21-14 victory over Winthrop in the Class C state championship game Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

The 11-1 Crusaders capped one of the greatest seasons in program history by knocking off the previously unbeaten Ramblers, who also wound up the season 11-1.

Senior fullback Chase Huckestein scored two touchdowns — including the game-winner in the fourth quarter — and Derek Smith threw for another to Bill Wetherbee to lead the Crusaders of Bangor to a win in their first state championship game appearance.
