BANGOR, Maine — It’s season ended with a disappointing loss on the snow-covered artificial turf of Winkin Complex, but Husson University’s football team will always look at the 2008 season as historic.
St. John Fisher College of Rochester, N.Y., scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, but it was a key sequence in the second quarter that led to the Cardinals’ 17-7 victory over Husson in the ECAC Northeast Bowl playoff on a blustery, bitter cold Saturday afternoon.
A 6-yard pass completion on fourth-and-7 got the Husson Eagles to the Cardinal’s 2-yard line with 10 minutes, 13 seconds left in the second quarter. But it came up a yard short and gave the ball back to St. John Fisher, which took it back 98 yards the other way for the first — and most momentum-establishing — score of the game.
Scott Biehl led the way for the 7-4 Cardinals with 113 yards on 27 carries. Quarterback Tommy Hammel was named game MVP with 35 yards rushing and another 95 passing.
Julius Williams led the 7-3 Eagles with 78 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
It was the first postseason playoff game for the Husson football team in program history, and Husson’s seven wins are a season-high.
