YARMOUTHPORT, Mass. Elizabeth J. “Bette” (Smith) Cozart, 84, wife of the late Leighton M. Cozart, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, after a long illness. Born in Lynchburg, Va., Mrs. Cozart was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Margaret (Reid) Smith. She graduated from Pinkerton Academy, Derry, N.H., and pursued a career with the government in Washington, D.C., as secretary to a senator from Texas during the 1940s. Mrs. Cozart made San Antonio her home for 27 years, until she retired to Little River, S.C., where she enjoyed golfing. She moved to Yarmouthport, Mass., in 2004 to be closer to her sisters and family. She was a member of the Mah-Jongg group at King’s Way, Yarmouthport, Mass., and enjoyed the friendships, competition and acceptance from her new friends. She is survived by three sisters, Margaret V. Vose of Searsport, Louise “Lulu” Schatzle of Orleans, Mass., and Marlene S. Hogg of Plymouth, Mass.; her lifelong friend, Glenna Downing of Little River, S.C.; many nieces and nephews, who will remember her love and generosity. In addition to her husband who died in 1975, she was predeceased by her brother, Charles E. Smith Jr.; and her nephew, Peter Schatzle. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, Mass. Interment will be private at Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman, Mass.
