BLUE HILL – Sylvia Jones Black, 76, was called to be with the Lord Nov. 21, 2008, at a Blue Hill hospital. She was born May 2, 1932, in Blue Hill, the daughter of Fred and Fannie (Atherton) Jones. Sylvia attended George Stevens Academy and graduated in 1949. She was one of six cheerleaders who cheered the basketball team to victory in the state championship in 1948. Sylvia spent her life doing the Lord’s work to the best of her ability. She worked at the Department of Human Services for 28 years, retiring in 1979. She then worked at Merle B. Grindle Agency for several years after that. Sylvia had a large family that she loved. Everyone has socks, a sweater, a quilt or something that Sibby made for them. She made beautiful quilts to raffle in support of East Blue Hill Village Church. She loved the church and made flower arrangements and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of East Blue Hill Grange and a leader of the Junior Grange for the area children. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Loretta Smith and husband, Foster; her sons, Dennis Black, and Philip Black and his wife, Denise, all of East Blue Hill; grandchildren, Jerin, Daryl, Dan Smith, Kelley, Richard and Cooper Black; great-grandchildren, Joseph Leger, Maria Smith and Brandon Smith; sisters, Nancy Hatch of Clifton and Mary Ellen Hutchinson of Stonington; brothers, Harry Jones of Sedgwick and Malcolm Jones of Bucksport; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. She was predeceased by both her parents; her brother, Lester Jones; sister, Priscilla Leighton; niece, Tammy Jones; and nephew, Michael Jones. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at East Blue Hill Village Church with the Rev. Ron Hutchins officiating. Because of her love of children and desire to help people, gifts may be made in her memory to Blue Hill Consolidated School to help support the education and well being of children and their families in the area, BHCS Memory Fund, 60 High St., Blue Hill, ME 04614.
