FALMOUTH – Rolland E. Foster, 81, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Sedgewood Commons. He was born April 17, 1927, in Brewer, the son of Rolland I. and Robena (Gero) Foster. Rolland attended local schools and was a 1945 graduate of Bangor High School. Rolland served his country in the Army during the closing stages of World War II. After his military service, Rolland attended Maine School of Commerce, Bangor. On May 31, 1951, he married the former Pauline Y. Lavoie at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Lewiston. Together they raised seven children. Rolland was employed by Rice and Miller, Co., Bangor, which later became Emery Waterhouse, Co., of Portland. He had an outstanding career as a salesman and sales manager, until his retirement in 1992. His career shifted after his retirement with Emery Waterhouse. Rolland owned and operated Falmouth Hardware with his sons, Gary and Jim. Rolland enjoyed hunting for many years and enjoyed the companionship of his friends at hunting camp. He was an avid Atlantic salmon fisherman, especially on the Margaree River, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where he and Polly traveled for 15 years. Rolland also enjoyed his many fishing trips fly-fishing for Atlantic salmon on the Matane River, Quebec, with his son, Gary. Rolland was a former communicant of Holy Martyrs Church, Falmouth, and was a communicant of St. Pius X Church, Portland. Rolland was predeceased by a sister, Joan Conover; and a grandson, Oliver Boothby. In addition to his wife of Falmouth, he is survived by his children: daughters, Elaine Boothby of Portland, Jane Kressbach and her husband, Andrew, of Brunswick, Ann Edwards and her husband, Russ and Carol Foster and her husband, Peter Mailey, all of Falmouth; sons, Gary Foster and his wife, Teresa, of Yarmouth, James Foster and his wife, Heidi, of Saco and Thomas Foster and his wife, Mia, of Victorville, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Foster family thanks the staff at Sedgewood Commons for the excellent care they provided to him. Also a special note of thanks to Beacon Hospice for the solace they provided to Rolland and the family. Visiting hours will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland, where prayers will be recited 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave., Portland. Interment will be at Blanchard Cemetery, Falmouth.
