AMHERST, PATTEN and BAR HARBOR – Dale O. Bates, 82, died Nov. 29, 2008, after a long illness. He was born April 9, 1926, in Merrill, the son of Frank and Lena (Rockwell) Bates Sr. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Dale worked for Harold MacQuinn for 20-plus years. Dale was an avid hunter and fisherman, as well as a trapper. He enjoyed working in the woods and preparing his own wood for the next winter. Dale is survived by his lady friend and partner, Hattie Mae Ruth Thomas of Amherst; two sons, Kenneth Bates and wife, Beth, of Patten and David Bates and wife, Kathleen, of Fayetteville, Ga.; a daughter, Claudia Collier and husband, Richard, of Bar Harbor; a brother, Carroll Bates and wife, Mary, of Patten; his extended family, Robert L. Thomas and wife, Nicole, of Bernard, Roberta L. Hunt and husband, Gary, of Hancock and Angela L. Dow and husband, Donald, of Ellsworth; 18 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. He was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene and Frank Bates Jr. Friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5, with the Rev. Mary Carol Griffin officiating. Interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.
