ORONO – Evelyn (Clifton) Marquez, 94, passed away Nov. 30, 2008, at a Bangor nursing home. She was born Aug. 13, 1914, in West Virginia, a daughter of Noah and Ida Mae McAvoy Clifton. At age 17, after completing high school, she entered nurses’ training at Presbyterian Union Hospital. During her nursing career, she was most proud of having worked at Bellevue Hospital, New York City and Cook County Hospital, Chicago. Later she did private duty nursing in California and then moved to Hawaii in the 1940s to continue her nursing career at Lanai City Hospital on the island of Lanai, territory of Hawaii. There she married Charles N. Marquez Jr. from a local island family. After relocating from Honolulu to Orono in 1958, she and Charlie opened Bangor Travel Agency. During the next 20 years, they traveled to every continent except Australia, and arranged business and pleasure trips for people throughout the Greater Bangor area. She enjoyed bridge and golf, and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bangor. She was predeceased by her husband; a daughter, Mary “Katy” Marquez; her sister, Juanita McDaniel; and brothers, Hylbert, Delbert, Hylmar and Walter Clifton. She will be sadly missed by her son, Charles N. Marquez III and his wife, Cathryn; grandchildren, Dan and Sarah; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
