BANGOR and WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – Marion (Thornton) Greaves died peacefully Dec. 5, 2008, in Bangor. The daughter of John and Sarah (Hardwick) Thornton from Rawdon, England, Marion was born in 1920, in Tarrytown, N.Y. Her family moved to Wappingers Falls, N.Y., where her father and brothers owned and ran Thornton’s Sunoco. Marion graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School and Wappingers Falls High School. She was also a graduate of Wood-Purinton Secretarial School, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She worked as a home service representative for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. During World War II, she pumped gas at her family’s service station. After the war Marion married 1st Lt. Donald L. Greaves and had three daughters. The family lived in the U.S. and Germany, and retired to Orono. Marion was an executive secretary in the Department of Physical Education & Athletics at the University of Maine for 14 years; studied nursing and sociology; and was an avid University of Maine sports fan. In 1977 she and Don moved to Corea and lived on the coast until Don’s death in 1984. Marion then relocated to Hampden. She was active in Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church and was Lay Leader for several years. Marion married Urban “Al” Feero of Winterport in 1995. They were active members of the Pine Tree Chapter of The Military Officers Association of America and Marion was secretary for many years. Marion enjoyed visiting her children, the Boston Red Sox, crazy quilt embroidery, watercolor painting, knitting and traveling. Marion is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Donna and Michael Allen of Winterport, Diana and Jack Ledger of Hampden and Laura and Randy Thornton of Leavenworth, Kan.; grandchildren, Summer Allen of Bangor, Gabriel Allen of New York City, Daniel Ledger of Hampden, Shannon (Roddin) Schwien and husband, Jason, of Lansing, Kan., and Kayla (Roddin) Haas and husband, Tyler, of Easton, Kan.; and her beloved great-grandchild, Adrian Schwien. She is survived by her youngest brother, Richard and wife, Sarah, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Marion was predeceased by her devoted companion, Al, who died Father’s Day 2008. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Wilfred, Ronald and Stanley. A memorial service will be announced in the spring. Interment will be at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Augusta.
