PRENTISS – Iona Madora Toby, 91, passed away Dec 9, 2008, at her home. She was born Oct 2, 1917, in Prentiss, the daughter of James and Winnifred (Boyington) Toby. Iona graduated from Lee Academy in 1934. Shortly after that, she went to work at Bangor State Hospital. After working there for three years, she came back to Prentiss and worked on the family farm with her father. During this time, she was asked to start teaching children K-8 in Treadwell School, Prentiss. Iona accepted the position and continued to teach at many different schools throughout the years, including schools in Prentiss, Springfield, Lee, Kingman and Lincoln. Iona taught children for nearly 50 years. She also was a foster parent for more than 25 years and kept in touch with a few of them throughout the years. Iona enjoyed teaching, knitting, gardening and taking care of her family. Iona was predeceased by her parents, James and Winnifred; her sisters, Sadie Smith and Rita Gillespie; brothers, Basil and Phil Toby; and a special niece, Joanne Walcott. She is survived by a sister, Estella Eaton; a special niece, Joyce Fogg and her husband, Elwood, of Florida; and a nephew, James Toby of Houlton; her boys, Guy Toby and his wife, Lori, of Enfield, N.H., and Graylin Toby and his wife, Leah and their children, Chris and Kassie, of Lincoln; many special great-nieces and great-nephews. Visiting hours will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Prentiss Church of God, where a service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Thomas Glover officiating Arrangements with Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln.
