BREWER – Robert L. Foster, 87, died unexpectedly Dec. 10, 2008, at his home. He was born Dec. 3, 1921, in Fairfield, the son of Eugene and Lillian (Sawyer) Foster. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving on the battleship USS South Dakota, and was a life member of the VFW, Orrington. He was a salesman selling for H.J. Heinz for 19 years and for Pezrow Industries prior to his retirement. He was a communicant of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Brewer. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Charlotte, in 1995; and four sisters, Juliette Boutin of Skowhegan, Kay Stevens of Waterville, Eleanor Nadeau of Waterville and Thelma Lane of Pittsfield. Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl Whalen and her husband, Michael, of Brewer and Doreen Herrin and her husband, David, of Dedham; two sons, Eugene “Gene” Foster and his wife, Elaine, of Eddington and Glenn Foster and his wife, Meg, of Newburyport, Mass.; one brother, Eugene Foster and his wife, Jane, of Portland; nine grandchildren, Kelly Foster and her partner, John Haney, Kristen, Keith and Karen Foster and her partner, Darryl Smith, Jeff Whalen and his wife, Shannon, Matthew Whalen, Emily (Herrin) McPherson and her husband, Shane, Olivia and Emily Foster; three stepgrandchildren, Beth (Herrin) Glidden and her husband, Jason, Rachel Herrin and Callie Gillis; four great-grandchildren, Juliana Whalen, Brooke Tompkins, Alyssa and Sydney Smith; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Wendall Hanscom, Eunice Baldwin, Josephine Crook and Lyman “Bud” Folsom; many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may visit 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Brewer. The family invites family and friends to join them for a reception immediately afterward at St. Teresa’s Parish Center. Interment with committal prayers and military honors will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
