MILLINOCKET – Myrtle Frances (Mason) Levesque passed away Dec. 23, 2008, at a Houlton nursing facility. Myrtle was born Aug. 7, 1913, in Danforth, the daughter of James A. Mason and Helena (LaBoutlier) Mason, and she was one of 10 children. After graduating from Danforth schools, Myrtle worked in the woodlands of Northern Maine. For many years she was a cook, spending winters in the woods with loggers and providing them with hearty, hot meals all season long. An avid herself hunter and fisherman, she also spent time guiding local and out of state sportsmen in the Portage Lake region for many years. She was a member of Maine Big Bucks Club and had her own trophy rack displayed proudly. In later years, she lived in both the Patten and Millinocket areas, where she spent time working in Baxter State Park as a gatekeeper. Throughout her life, Myrtle was a caregiver for others, including many family members and her friends at The Maine Avenue Manor, Millinocket, where she resided for 25 years. Growing and caring for flowers and sharing them with others was another passion of Myrtle’s. Many of her perennial gardens exist today. Her creativity and love of sewing, knitting, crocheting and crafts was known by all as she would often make quilts, toys, mittens, hats and clothing throughout the year and distribute to those she loved and those in need. Her motto was always that it was better to give than to receive. After residing her life in living and loving Maine, during the 80s Myrtle felt very fortunate to travel with the local priest and other parishioners from St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Millinocket, where she saw many European countries, the Vatican and Hawaii. Myrtle is survived by a sister, Irma Grover of Howland; a sister-in-law, Imogene Mason of Millinocket; nephews, Blaine Cox of Monticello, James Mason of Millinocket and Bruce Mason, also of Millinocket; as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews in Houlton and Millinocket areas. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. Spring interment will be at Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Myrtle may be sent to Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Martin’s Church, 19 Colby St., Millinocket, ME 04462. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.lamsonfh.com.
