PRESQUE ISLE – Carol D. Stewart, 82, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away Jan. 6, 2009. Carol was born June 5, 1926, in Easton, to Perley and Lillian (Flewelling) Deane. She graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1943 and then earned both her Bachelor of Science and master’s degrees from Tufts University, Medford, Mass. Carol pursued her love and passion for education teaching at Ricker College, Houlton; Washington and Lee High School, Arlington, Va.; Orono High School, Cony High School and Presque Isle High School. She then became a guidance counselor for Presque Isle High School, Caribou Middle School and Ashland schools before retiring in 1979. While teaching at Ricker College, Carol met the love of her life, Harold “Bud” Stewart. They would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary, March 8, 2009. A lasting memory was when Bud and Carol celebrated their 50th anniversary with a Caribbean cruise, accompanied by their children, Deb and Hal, Hal’s wife, Melanie, and grandchildren, Trey and Meredith. After retiring from education, Carol was able to continue her passion for education when she was nominated by Governor McKernan to the Maine State Board of Education. She proudly served the State Board for three years. Carol also proudly served the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library for more than 25 years as trustee and chairperson. Carol also proudly served many years on the board of Aroostook Mental Health Services. Carol was an avid reader, known often to read a book in a night. She loved playing bridge with her friends and golfing with the ladies, and with Bud. One winter, she had the luck of getting a hole-in-one while golfing at Hideaway Country Club, Fort Myers, Fla. Carol is survived by her loving husband, Bud; and two children, Deborah and Hal. She is also survived by her very close sister, Verna Crandall, and Verna’s children, Carol Jordan and Dr. Donald DeLong. Carol is also survived by three very special grandchildren, Trey, Meredith and Grant. They will forever miss Grammie’s surprises and treasure hunts in the back yard. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Presque Isle Congregational United Church of Christ, 29 Church St., with the Rev. Dr. Robert Grove-Markwood officiating.
