STEUBEN – Mildred (Smith) Piper, 98, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at an Ellsworth health care facility, after a unexpected illness. A lifelong resident of Steuben, she was born there May 12, 1910, the daughter of the late Harry A. and Gertrude (Willey) Smith. Mrs. Piper was a graduate of Steuben High School, Class of 1928. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Milbridge from 1929 until 1945. Later, she became the librarian of Henry D. Moore Library, Steuben, for 19 years. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening. She shared 60 years of marriage with the late Eugene W. Piper, who died in 2001. Family members include a foster son, Tony Newell and his wife, Betty, of Steuben; three grandchildren, Tonya Kirby of Arkansas, Amanda Heard of Florida and Cortney Newell of New York; three great-grandchildren, Sean Kirby of Arkansas, Blake Heard of Florida and Maddison Kepner of New York; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Loring “Bus” Smith of Massachusetts. Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge. Relatives and friends are welcome. Private burial will be afterward at Smithville Cemetery, Steuben. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Henry D. Moore Parish House and Library, P.O.
