MILLINOCKET and PORTLAND – Edith I. Harmon, 96, beloved mother and nana, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Springbrook Center, Westbrook, after an extended illness. She was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Millinocket, the daughter of Augustine and Laura (Medece) Mascetta. Edith was raised and educated in Millinocket, and was a graduate of George W. Stearns High School. She attended and graduated from business school in Bangor. On Feb. 9, 1946, she married Gerald L. Harmon, who predeceased her, March 11, 1998. Edith traveled the country and the world with her husband, who made his career in the U.S. Army. They retired to Portland to be close to her daughter and to enjoy watching her grandchildren grow from little kids into adults. But her spirit and thoughts were never far from Millinocket and her family and lifelong friends there. Edith took great pride in her Italian heritage, even if sometimes just to ruffle her husband’s feathers, and instilled a love of family and pride of heritage in her daughter and grandchildren. Her family was her priority and Edith created a loving home wherever she resided. Edith is survived by her daughter, Mary Spugnardi and her husband, Roy, of Buxton; three grandchildren, Nicole Mayerhauser of Washington, D.C., Michael Spugnardi of Portland and Kathryn Delgiacco of Peabody, Mass.; two sisters, Norma Mascetta of Bangor and Elizabeth Pasquine of Millinocket; one brother, Americo Mascetta of Millinocket; several nieces and nephews, and too many friends to count. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Friday at Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 19 Colby St., Millinocket. Spring interment will be at Millinocket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edith’s memory may be made to Katahdin Area Support Group, 10 Field St., Millinocket, ME 04462. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.lamsonfh.com.
